4 teams that need to trade for Trey Lance at a bargain price in 2023
Trey Lance trade option no. 1: Minnesota Vikings
This is one of the most obvious spots because it has been reported the Vikings are potentially interested in Lance.
According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk, the 49ers and Vikings had talks revolving around a trade for Lance.
"“At this year’s Scouting Combine, there were rumors of a potential Kirk Cousins trade from Minnesota to San Francisco,” Florio said. “Those rumors may have come from the reality that the 49ers and Vikings had discussions about another quarterback. Per league source, the two teams talked about Trey Lance.”"
Cousins, 35, is under contract through 2023, and it is possible that the Vikings do not bring Cousins back in 2024. The Vikings and Cousins have seemingly hit a wall, as the quarterback has struggled in big spots, such as the playoffs.
It also looks like the Vikings are not necessarily heading into a rebuild, but more of a re-tool season. Minnesota lost Adam Thielen in free agency, and now Dalvin Cook could be a cap casualty. Releasing Cook would save the Vikings $9 million in cap space. By no means are the Vikings looking to lose or anything like that, but it may be time to hit the reset button at the quarterback position.
As mentioned earlier, Lance is still only 22 years old and still possesses the potential to be a very good quarterback in the NFL. We simply do not have enough game film to determine whether or not Lance can be a starting quarterback in the NFL.
One problem in this scenario is the Vikings would take a cap hit of $38 million if they trade Cousins before June 1. However, we have seen examples of teams eating a detrimental amount of dead cap by trading quarterbacks on expensive contracts. The Eagles dealt with a $33.8 million dead cap hit when they traded Carson Wentz to the Colts. The Rams dealt with a $22.2 million dead cap hit by trading Jared Goff to the Lions. Both teams have represented the NFC in the Super Bowl in the last two years. It would not be the end of the world for the Vikings.
As for Lance, he would be heading into a situation where he can contend, while Justin Jefferson is a great go-to option for a young quarterback. Head Coach Kevin O’Connell is a smart, young offensive mind that can enhance Lance’s development in a new environment.
