The 2023 NFL Draft saw two running backs, Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs, get drafted in the Top 15, investing high draft picks in the position.

The Atlanta Falcons and the Detroit Lions went into the draft with a plan — add a running back. Despite the 2023 NFL Draft being known for its depth and not for its top-end talent. Yet two backs went inside the Top 15. The Falcons drafted Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs went to the Lions. Both are exceptional players and have impressive skill sets, but their selection within the top 15 of the 2023 NFL Draft might not be the best choice.

While Robinson and Gibbs are two of the most talented running backs to enter the draft in recent years, there is a historical trend of devaluing the position. The NFL has shifted towards a more pass-heavy league, with offenses prioritizing the quarterback and receivers over the running game. This has led to a decline in the value of the running back position. Derrick Henry is the last real bell-cow back. He’s been the guy the Titans counted o for a long time, but not all backs and situations are created equal.

Let’s be frank, the lifespan of an NFL running back is relatively short. The average career of a running back lasts only a few years, and their production often drops significantly after their first four or five seasons. This makes it a risky investment for teams to draft running backs early on, especially given the high salaries that come with top picks. Saquon Barkley had two good seasons since being taken No. 2 overall. He was riddled by injuries and he was so dependent on the men up front that he didn’t find success.

Although running backs are still an important part of an offense, their role has changed. The position has become more specialized, with teams utilizing multiple running backs with different skill sets to create a more dynamic offense. In this sense, it may be more beneficial for teams to invest in a running back later in the draft or even acquire one through free agency.

Despite the fact that Robinson and Gibbs have the talent to be successful in the NFL, there are inherent risks that come with drafting running backs early in the first round.
