5. Carson Wentz, QB

For Carson Wentz, the subject is not necessarily just about what his best landing spot is as one of the top available NFL free agents, but where might he actually have a chance to play some ball? That kind of clears things up a little bit, but the question within that question is what teams are going to be lined up to sign the former no. 2 overall pick out of North Dakota State, who is still only 30?

This is such a unique and interesting situation because Wentz has talent. It was just two seasons ago when he was the primary starter for Frank Reich and the Colts, sitting there with two weeks to play in the regular season with a 98 percent chance of making the playoffs before those chances disappeared. He then gets shipped off to Washington and doesn’t play well enough to be the team’s primary starter. Nor was he healthy enough for that.

Now, you have a guy who has a bit of a history of being known as not the best teammate, you have teams filling out their QB depth charts around the league, and you have a situation like the one we’re looking at where, I’m sure Wentz will get picked up, but how long is he going to have to wait?

For my money, I would bet that he lands in an NFL city without total clarity at the top of the QB depth chart, even if you consider that teams like the Buccaneers and Packers are relatively set at the top of their depth charts with Baker Mayfield and Jordan Love, respectively.

I could see his clearest path to playing time coming with the Arizona Cardinals, where Kyler Murray is recovering from a knee injury and the options to play include Colt McCoy, David Blough, Jeff Driskel, and rookie Clayton Tune.

Landing spots:

  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • Arizona Cardinals
  • Green Bay Packers
