What the Dexter Lawrence extension means for Christian Wilkins
According to Adam Schefter, the New York Giants have re-signed Dexter Lawrence to a massive extension. This is the latest in a long line of nose tackles extended this offseason.
Jeffery Simmons got extended to a monster deal that is worth around the same price by a Tennessee team that is beginning the start of their rebuild.
Also, Daron Payne got a similar extension after getting placed on the franchise tag by the Washington Commanders. All of these extensions show the fact that Miami Dolphins defensive lineman Christian Wilkins will get extended at some point but the question will be for the terms of the deal.
This is a great deal for the Giants because Lawrence is a great player and paying a nose tackle the type of money the All-Pro got is quite fair value.
Wilkins certainly fairs quite well to these players as they all are around the same tier level of nose tackle. While Wilkins is certainly worth the price, extending the player will put the Dolphins in a tough spot for next year’s offseason.
Assuming the contract extension is around a $20 million cap hit annually after the first year and with the prorated bonus of an extra $4 million every year, that means the Miami Dolphins will be way deep over the cap next year.
While the cap can be adjusted they would be in the red close to where the Saints were this year.
Miami has plenty of ways to cut down on their cap hit by re-working the Tyreek Hill deal among others but putting them in this situation in the first place could be very troublesome.
Despite all of this, I think that a deal for Wilkins gets done by the Dolphins sooner than later. Miami should eventually offer Christian Wilkins a similar deal that all of these other players have gotten this off-season and help the Dolphins go back to the playoffs in a loaded AFC.
