Denver Broncos got it right with their moves to upgrade the O-line

The Denver Broncos made some massive moves in NFL free agency thanks to the fact that the team is now drawing from the Walmart well financially. The Broncos are owned by the Walton-Penner group, and the Walton-Penner group showed a willingness to open up the checkbook in free agency.

Few teams spent as much as the Denver Broncos in terms of total money on free agents, and the Broncos made some desperately-needed upgrades to an offensive line that allowed over 60 sacks last season.

The Broncos signed former 49ers first-round pick Mike McGlinchey to a five-year deal worth $87.5 million in total money and almost simultaneously signed former Ravens guard Ben Powers to a four-year deal worth $51 million in total money.

Although McGlinchey is more known for his run blocking than pass protection, it’s clear that Sean Payton wants to establish a consistent and physical ground game with the Denver Broncos and both of these guys can help do that. If McGlinchey can even be league average at the right tackle spot, it will be better than what the Broncos have had.

While the team’s struggle to find a quarterback in the post-Peyton Manning era has been maddening, the Broncos’ hole and revolving door at right tackle has arguably been worse. Certainly longer.

Without a first-round pick or second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Broncos had to be aggressive in upgrading the offensive line and they did just that with these two moves.
