Denver Broncos might regret not doing more at RB

What we’ve been hearing in the 2023 offseason is a renewed emphasis on winning the line of scrimmage, emphasizing the running game in Denver this coming season.

The confusing aspect of that is — who is going to be toting the rock for Denver?

Javonte Williams, the team’s budding star at the running back position, suffered a major knee injury early last season and his availability for Week 1 is in serious question. The biggest moves the Broncos made at the running back position in the 2023 offseason included signing veteran Samaje Perine, formerly of the Bengals, and bringing in former Saints undrafted free agent Tony Jones Jr.

The Broncos’ depth chart at running back right now does not look good, especially if Perine were to go down at any point. Have the Broncos done enough at running back to be a run-oriented team?

I would say no, they haven’t.

The Broncos passed on backs in the 2023 NFL Draft, a class that was fairly deep at the position group. They have a chance to still grab a veteran in free agency like Zeke Elliott or Kareem Hunt if they want, perhaps wait it out and see if Dalvin Cook becomes available.

There are still options out there for the Broncos to upgrade this position and I think before the season starts, they are going to need to.
