Armed with cap space and a team ready to win now, the Dallas Cowboys make a ton of sense to make a play for DeAndre Hopkins. There might not be a better fit, honestly, than DeAndre Hopkins and the Dallas Cowboys.
The future Hall of Fame wide receiver was cut by the Arizona Cardinals last week, and the contract seemed to be the sticking point. It’s apparent that no team wanted to trade for that large contract, and with Hopkins not being entirely available in recent years and beginning to get up there in age, his not being traded makes sense.
"“What I want is stable management upstairs, that’s something I haven’t really had the past couple years of my career coming from Houston and then to Arizona,” Hopkins said. “A QB who loves the game, a QB who brings everybody on board with him, not just himself but everybody around him … and a great defense. A great defense wins championships.”"
I mean, what don’t the Dallas Cowboys satisfy here? Dak Prescott is an incredible teammate, always says the right thing, and is clearly dedicated to his craft. The Cowboys have had the same management structure for years, and even though Jerry Jones sometimes can’t keep his mouth shut, Dallas has excelled in the draft and in free agency; they field one of the best rosters in the NFL.
And, obviously, the Cowboys have an insane defense. Dan Quinn has quickly turned this defense into one of the three best units in the NFL. They sack the QB a ton and force turnovers. All of this combined makes the Cowboys a great fit, and even better, they have enough cap space to make this happen.
According to spotrac.com, Dallas is sitting on about $14 million in cap space, which is plenty to sign Hopkins. The team currently boasts a solid receiving core with CeeDee Lamb, Michael Gallup, and Brandin Cooks.
Why not add Hopkins? This would be a classic case of the rich getting richer, and I think it’s a move that a Super Bowl hopeful would make.
