Chicago Bears: 5 Players who need to make a big impression
Trestan Ebner, Running Back
Trestan Ebner was the Chicago Bears’ sixth-round pick in the 2022 draft. His size, speed, and versatility were supposed to be helpful to the offense.
Ebner was supposed to provide meaningful snaps to back up David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert.
That did not happen, however. He actually got a chance to show what he could do. Both Montgomery and Herbert missed time due to injuries. That gave Ebner a shot to impress. It was a situation similar to Herbert in 2021. With Montgomery’s injury, Herbert got a chance to shine and he took advantage of it.
Ebner did not do that. He looked indecisive when hitting the hole. As a result, he only had 54 yards on 24 carries. Additionally, he was not a threat in the passing game the team thought. He couldn’t learn the routes and what he was supposed to do. He ended up with just 2 catches for 8 yards.
Furthermore, Ebner could not block. Having a good blocker that close to the quarterback is essential for the offense to succeed, especially when you don’t know how the offensive line will hold up.
No Ebener finds himself in a battle with Homer for the final spot on the unit. Herbert, Foreman, and Johnson will have the top spots. Ebner needs to show that he deserves another chance at helping the team. He faces an uphill battle.
