The Buffalo Bills kicked off their mandatory minicamp on June 13 and their star wide receiver, Stefon Diggs, is not in attendance. This was confirmed by head coach Sean McDermott who added that he was “very concerned” by Diggs’ absence. It appears that Diggs’s absence is not excused.

Diggs was also not at the facility during off-season activities however those are not considered mandatory and it is not unusual for veteran players to skip those. One of the many issues with Diggs not attending mandatory minicamp is that there is no simple explanation. Diggs just recently signed a new contract with the Bills in April of 2022. The extension provided the receiver with a four-year extension worth up to $96 million with $70 million in guarantees.

On average Diggs is making $24 million a year and his contract places him statistically in the top 5 highest paid wide receivers in several categories. Most notably Diggs is the 3rd highest-paid receiver in terms of overall cash and 2nd in guarantees at signing. Not too shabby.

Overall Diggs lands as the 6th highest-paid wide receiver in the league and as far as theories go he could be upset about that. Diggs could believe based on his production he deserves an even more lucrative contract. In 2022 Diggs’ numbers were right up there:

  • 3rd in touchdowns with 11
  • 4th in receptions with 108
  • 5th in yards with 1,429

It still would be odd for Diggs to hold out when the difference between him and the other top receivers is not an overly substantial amount of money. Hopefully, the situation is resolved and the Bills can figure out a way to keep their star receiver happy. Bills Mafia is hoping that this scene on the sideline between quarterback Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs is not the last time Diggs is on the field in a Bill uniform.
