Chicago Bears: Bold predictions for training camp 2023
Prediction no. 3: Poles doesn’t pick up a pass rusher
Despite what Poles has done this offseason, many experts still believe there is one glaring hole that remains — obtaining a good pass rusher.
Last season, the Chicago Bears were horrible at getting to the quarterback. They ranked last in both sacks and quarterback knockdowns. Opposing quarterbacks were consistently able to stand in the pocket for a long time before finally finding an open receiver.
The lack of a pass rush resulted in a very tired defense late in games on too many occasions.
Poles went and signed Rasheem Green and DeMarcus Walker. Walker will be a starter and Green will be a backup. They go in with Trevis Gipson and Dominique Robinson.
Gipson had a lot of hope in him a couple of seasons ago when he had to step in for Khalil Mack. Mack was injured and only played seven games. Gipson stepped in and was effective. He had seven sacks for the season, but he especially played well as a starter in the final nine games.
As a starter, Gipson recorded 25 of his 39 tackles, 5 of his 7 sacks, and all four of his forced fumbles.
He wasn’t able to repeat that in 2022, however. He ended up with just 3 sacks and 31 tackles. He did have 11 quarterback hits, though. That is interesting because he said he was close to getting to the quarterback but was just a split-second late. He said he made adjustments so he can be a little quicker.
Robinson was supposed to be a project last season. However, he impressed the coaches so he received more snaps. With the experience he received last season, he could take a bigger step this season.
Walker could be the key here. He had a career season in 2022 with 7 sacks and 32 tackles. He also had 10 tackles for loss and 16 quarterback hits.
If Walker can build on last season’s success and take a bigger step this year, it could negate the need for looking for another pass rusher. Having Walker and Gipson play well really settles the unit. Additionally, Walker is angling on becoming a team leader. He will hold his teammates accountable and help them improve.
If Walker can indeed pick up where he left off last season and become a team leader it will be great for the unit. Poles can then decide to use the money he still has to strengthen another position.
