The quarterback position has seen a ton of movement in recent years. Could there be even more movement in the 2024 NFL offseason?  My theory is that when other signal callers around the NFL saw Tom Brady leave the New England Patriots for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after the 2019 season, they felt more empowered to make a move themselves.

If someone like Brady can switch teams after two decades for a better chance to win, then why shouldn’t other quarterbacks do the same?  We’ve seen a ton of big-name quarterbacks switch teams recently including Matthew Stafford, Jared Goff, Deshaun Watson, Russell Wilson, Carson Wentz, Matt Ryan, and others likely still to come.

The quarterback position is the most important in professional sports, and if you don’t have an elite one, you won’t win a Super Bowl.  It’s that simple.  Well, teams don’t seem to be slowing down in their pursuit for a championship.  I think we could see even more quarterback movement in the 2024 NFL offseason, and these three players come to mind.

Russell Wilson, Denver Broncos

There really is no reason for the Denver Broncos to roster Russell Wilson beyond 2023 if he cannot bounce back this coming season.  He has no connection to Sean Payton and is on a huge contract extension.  Financially, it would be hard for the Broncos to cut Wilson, but it would be possible.

They’d have to endure a dead cap hit of over $30 million and would not save money on that year’s cap space, but there is no reason for them to continue paying Wilson nearly $50 million a year if he is not playing like it.  I do think he bounces back and the national NFL landscape stops talking about how badly he played, but it’s always possible that Wilson is simply washed up and doesn’t have it anymore.

This would likely spell the end of Russell Wilson as a surefire starter in the NFL, and he’d likely have to sign on as someone who had to compete for the starting job.  Russell Wilson is still a Hall of Fame quarterback and is still one of the most efficient in NFL history, but at some point, he won’t be an NFL-caliber quarterback anymore, and 2023 could be that year for him.

The Denver Broncos would again be searching for their franchise QB.
