Expectations for the New York Jets are extremely high in 2023, but expectations just got a little higher for Pro Bowl defensive lineman Quinnen Williams. Williams is coming off of his best season as a professional, and it just so happened to be perfectly timed given Williams’ contract situation.

Expectations for Williams will be higher this coming season because he’s reportedly just signed a massive four-year contract worth $96 million in total money and $66 million in guarantees, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

A couple of other important notes about this contract…

First of all, the deal was negotiated by Williams’ agent, Nicole Lynn, who also negotiated the contract for Jalen Hurts with the Eagles this offseason. That’s significant because those are the two biggest contracts negotiated by each of those respective franchises in history.

Second, Williams gets an average of $24 million in average value per year, which is not only the most in Jets history but it’s also the second-most for a defensive lineman behind Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles Rams.

That’s a high honor for Williams.

Quinnen Williams makes New York Jets history after massive year

After playing really solid football through his first three NFL seasons, Quinnen Williams broke out in a big way in year four for the Jets. He had a combined 32 QB hits and 15.0 sacks in his first three NFL seasons, then had 28 QB hits and 12 sacks just last season.

The Jets had already picked up Williams’ fifth-year option as a 2019 first-round pick, so he was under contract for over $9 million in 2023 already. Despite being under contract, it felt like both sides were motivated to get a deal done as quickly as possible this offseason to avoid any sort of off-field distractions.

The Jets understandably want to make sure that Williams is on the field for training camp, continuing his emergence as one of the NFL’s top young stars on the defensive line.

And Williams has further growing to do. Despite getting $66 million in guarantees, Williams is just 25 years old and will be able to re-negotiate this deal before the age of 29. That should allow him the potential for maximum career earnings, another job well done by his agent.

Once again, expectations for the New York Jets are massive this season. This team had a dominant defense last year and traded for four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers this offseason. Now that they feel they are on the right trajectory, they’re going to start handing out these massive contracts. And no one has benefitted more, thus far, than Quinnen Williams.
