Usually, transactions that the Dallas Cowboys make don’t have the potential to positively impact the Washington Commanders. However, when the Cowboys traded for quarterback Trey Lance from the San Fransico 49ers, that deal opened up that possibility for the Commanders.

On the surface, this trade for the Cowboys improved their depth chart at the quarterback position, which shouldn’t catch the eyes of Washington fans. However, Dallas already had three quarterbacks and it appears that backup Will Grier will be the odd man out, according to David Moore of Dallas Morning News. Grier getting cut is a blessing for the Commanders and they should seriously consider signing him.

The Washington Commanders need to pursue former Dallas Cowboys backup quarterback Will Grier

For Commanders fans who liked what they saw from Jake Fromm and don’t want to shake the boat by cutting the current third-string QB, that’s a valid take. Fromm is solid as a third-string, but nothing more, Grier showed in the Cowboys’ last preseason game that he can be a primary back, maybe even more.

Against the Las Vegas Raiders, the former West Virginia standout went off. Grier had 305 passing yards completing 29 of 35 attempts and two touchdowns. He also had 53 rushing yards on 10 attempts and touchdowns.

If Sam Howell is the long-term answer for the Washington Commanders’ starting quarterback position then finding a long-term back should be a priority for the franchise as well. With that in mind, Grier showed the potential that he could be that guy whereas Fromm has been solid but not overly impressive. He’s certainly worth a look and there’s little downside for the Commanders to do so.
