The Philadelphia Eagles have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in each of the past two weeks, blowing games in which they had a 97 percent (or greater) win probability late.
This is a critical week for Philadelphia, and I have a feeling they’re going to respond. But to say that it’s not going to be easy would be putting it mildly. The Carolina Panthers have one of the best offenses in the league, and they’re coming off a bye week.
Nobody expected coming into this season that the Eagles would be walking away from a game where Dameon Pierce led the team with 14 yards rushing, Darius Cooper led the team in receiving, and Nick Sirianni is facing questions about his job security after just five games.
Life comes at you fast in the NFL, even less than two calendar years removed from winning the Super Bowl.
The Eagles are early 1.5-point favorites at home against the Panthers, but again, this Panthers team is no slouch coming in. They have the 4th-best scoring offense in the NFL right now. Where the Eagles need to expose the Panthers is on the ground, where they rank 31st in the NFL in rushing yards allowed and dead last at 5.4 yards per carry allowed.
If the Eagles can’t expose the Panthers on the ground in this game, we’re going to have to start really ramping up the difficult conversations surrounding this team.
After blowing it in impressive fashion against the Jaguars over in London, the Eagles need to get back on track fast. The Panthers, meanwhile, are going to be trying to do something few in the NFC South have been able to accomplish lately: Get themselves above .500.
Prediction: Eagles win 26-23
