The 2027 NFL Draft class was already extremely complicated at the quarterback position. Guarantees of it being a "generational" group were apparently premature.

The latest reports about Oregon Ducks quarterback Dante Moore have further complicated the discussion.

Moore is reportedly going to be out for the rest of the 2026 season after suffering a concussion from a brutal hit in the Ducks' game against USC earlier this season. After suffering such a scary injury, apparently the risk of further injury is just not worth Moore's NFL future. Frankly, he has not even been cleared yet to play in games.

Nobody could blame him for this decision given the severity of the injury. It also feels like something that could force NFL teams to go back to their earlier (preseason) notes on Moore as a prospect, and he was considered the #1 QB prospect by many heading into this season.

Dante Moore being out for the 2026 season complicates 2027 NFL Draft projection

From what we had seen this season (so far), Moore hadn't exactly solidified himself as the QB1 of the 2027 NFL Draft class.

He decided to forsake the opportunity to be QB1 or QB2 in the 2026 NFL Draft in order to return to Oregon for one more season, hoping to refine some of the aspects of his game he felt weren't exactly ready for the pros. Plus, with the way football players are being paid in the NIL era, the idea of going back to school isn't as ridiculous as it might have been at one point in time, even for a star quarterback.

But in Moore's case, we see why the risk is not always worth the potential reward. When you are almost guaranteed top-5 status in a draft class, it's probably worth it to just make the jump. The injury he suffered on a dirty hit against USC is not a small issue, especially with the nature of the injury being to the head/brain.

How high could Dante Moore go in the 2027 NFL Draft?

Even with the news that he's going to miss the remainder of the 2026 season, I'm still expecting Moore to go very high in the 2027 NFL Draft. That conversation may be on the back burner for the time being, but if he's medically cleared, that would have to be the expectation.

NFL teams had him high on their own way-too-early 2027 draft boards, and the ink is still drying on those scouting notes. Teams don't throw away evaluations like that just because of a couple of games in a season.

Teams consider the changing circumstances for a player, the loss of key weapons around him, opponents played, and all of the other factors outside of a player's control when considering any regression on the field.

Moore still posted some decent numbers in 2026 when he did play, throwing 9 touchdowns in four games and averaging 9.1 yards per completion, the highest number of his collegiate career.

He's currently projected to go in the 1st round of our latest 2027 NFL mock draft (18th overall to the Steelers).

Will Dante Moore actually enter the 2027 NFL Draft?

Of course, all of the talk about Moore's draft status is first dependent on his health. It's something nobody even wants to put out there in so many words, but the last thing anyone wants is to see this being a career-ending situation.

Thankfully, that doesn't seem to be the case. Moore had returned to practice in early October, but his status for actually playing in games has not changed for about a month at this point.

Once Oregon was eliminated from playoff contention, the decision was made to essentially put Moore on "injured reserve", even though that doesn't exist at the college level. He has to focus on his health, as it has been pointed out, and he doesn't need the pressure of returning to the field for Oregon this season with his long-term health the clear priority, even over his professional career.
