The Houston Texans decided to cut ties with veteran tight end Owen Daniels earlier this week, and the move wasn’t a surprise since the solid starter was owed $4.5 million in 2013. With Ryan Griffin emerging as a darkrhorse breakout player a year after Garrett Graham’s darkhorse breakout season in 2012, the Texans seemed set at the tight end position and didn’t need to keep Daniels around. His release signaled that the Texans would be able to re-sign Graham, and that’s always been the expected outcome.
According to the Houston Chronicle’s John McClain, Garrett Graham has signed a three-year deal to stay with the Texans, and it’s great to see that their next quarterback will go into the 2014 season with the solid tight end duo of Graham and Griffin. The Texans have had a nice running list of TEs over the years, as they lost James Casey to the Philadelphia Eagles last offseason but had Graham and Griffin coming up the wings.
Graham, 27, caught 28 passes for 263 yards and three touchdowns in 2012, and this was the first sign that he would break out. Replacing Casey as the team’s No. 2 TE, Graham became the No. 1 guy after Daniels suffered an injury five games into the season, and he finished with a solid 49 receptions for 545 yards and five touchdowns.
