The NFL preseason has officially come and gone. Training camp battles were decided in real time due to the live reps that players get at this time of year. Some of those battles went the way of rookies, while others did not.
That is the beauty of the preseason. You are waiting for someone to go out and grab themselves a future in this league. When someone comes out of college and gets a role over a veteran, it is a significant story.
Over the course of these past few weeks, there have been countless rookies mentioned who might have played themselves into a roster spot. That is the difference between those pieces and this one. Over the preseason, there has been a lot of speculation; however, the rosters are set now, and these are the rookies (who have not yet been mentioned in previous weeks) who played themselves into a roster spot in the final week of the preseason.
Rookies who played themselves into a roster spot
1. Skyler Bell
Skyler Bell was a rookie who made his NFL debut in the final week of the preseason, as he dealt with a groin injury. As a guy making his first appearance in the league, Bell led the Buffalo Bills in both rushing and receiving this week. Not many people are great enough to make that big of a mark this early in their career.
Bell had a total of 77 yards and a touchdown on eight touches of the ball, equating to 9.6 yards per touch. The Bills have its wide receiver room set up top with DJ Moore having the lead job, and Khalil Shakir being in the second spot. However, there is a logjam for that third wide receiver in the offense, and Bell may have solidified himself into that role with his spectacular showing on Thursday.
