2. San Francisco 49ers
Last week: 1st
Undefeated no more. The San Francisco 49ers have finally fallen after a close call against the Washington Commanders on Monday night.
Maybe the Atlanta Falcons can send the Commanders a thank-you note for warming the 49ers up.
Obviously, every team in the NFL is mortal in some way. The 49ers – just like everyone else – have shown themselves to be “beatable” this season, even with an undefeated record going into this particular game.
Brock Purdy had a pair of interceptions and was also sacked twice, a couple of things we simply haven’t seen him do a lot of this season. And you have to credit the way the Falcons played in this one. The 49ers lost the turnover battle 4-0 in this one, and that’s nearly impossible to overcome on the road.
How many times have I said that weird stuff happens when West Coast teams go on the road to play in the early time slot against an East Coast team?
1. Minnesota Vikings
Last week: 4th
The Minnesota Vikings remain undefeated. Brian Flores and his defense remain inevitable.
Although there might have been hope that the offense would really start to pick up the pace after what we saw over the last two weeks, the Vikings faced a pretty inspired effort from the Colts’ defense, and had to win this game in true Big Ten style.
It was an ugly pitcher’s duel with great defense on both sides, and simply hope that neither offense would give the game away. The Colts were the ones, in the end, who did exactly that. You can typically overcome losing the turnover battle 0-1, but not against a Brian Flores-coached defense.
The Colts ran 59 total plays in this game and wound up with 64 total yards passing.
It was another absolute masterclass from the NFL’s foremost supporter of the blitz. And the Vikings continue to have all the margin for error they need offensively to figure things out. You can’t argue with 6-0 and a dominating defense.
