3. Jared Goff, QB, Detroit Lions
Jared Goff is insane, people. He has 15 passing touchdowns on the year with just one interception. He's playing the best football of his career and has thrown at least one passing touchdown in each game thus far. We are seeing the Lions beginning to hit their stride, and Goff's high-end passing is impossible to ignore. While Goff isn't a playmaker at the position like other QBs, he's producing at a higher tick than most of them.
And with the Lions being a star-studded, relevant team, that does directly help the QB in situations like this. Goff has played at an MVP level multiple times before, but he is playing the best football of his career thus year and could have a legitimate shot at winning the award.
2. Brock Purdy, QB, San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers rank 4th in points scored per game. Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers are 6-1 this year. Purdy leads QBs in success rate, QBR, and sack percentage. He's playing a brand of very clean, efficient, high-end football. He also has a 100+ passer rating in all but two games this year and also leads the NFL with longest completion, at 82 yards.
The 49ers are a juggernaut on defense as well, so the winning is going to continue to help Purdy. While the MVP voting might feel flawed, overall team success is also important here, and with the 49ers trending toward winning, let's say, 13+ games, Purdy is MVP-caliber.
1. Joe Burrow, QB, Cincinnati Bengals
Joe Burrow tops our MVP power rankings - he leads the NFL in completion percentage and touchdown passes, and if he maintains his production across a full 17 games, he'll finish with this:
5,136 yards
49 touchdowns
15 interceptions
It would be every bit of an MVP-caliber season. The Cincinnati Bengals are also 5-2 on the year and finally seem to be getting something together with their defense. Burrow has always been an outstanding QB and is honestly the closest thing to Tom Brady this league has. Health is going to be a major factor here, but he's trending toward a career-best season, and there isn't any reason to believe that he isn't healthy.
It's hard to look at Burrow and not think he's the MVP of the league right now.
