2. Anderson Castle
There was no mention of plenty of teams in last week’s edition of this article. The Indianapolis Colts were one of them. That is not going to be the case this week, as there needs to be a discussion of who is Jonathan Taylor’s backup.
This is the second consecutive week that Anderson Castle has had a standout performance for this running back room. So far this preseason, Castle has run 17 times for 88 yards, which is an average of 4.6 yards per carry. While this is not going against starting defensive units, it is a high level of play, which should land Castle firmly in the conversation for the backup role in Indianapolis this upcoming season.
3. Trebor Peña
Peña is a bit of an interesting case for the Jacksonville Jaguars. The thing with the team is that it has a rather deep wide receiver room already with Jakobi Meyers, Parker Washington, Brian Thomas Jr and the occasional Travis Hunter. That said, Peña had a phenomenal outing in the second week of the preseason.
He went for 72 yards and a touchdown on four receptions. Granted, the rookie was going up against low-level talent, but that is a good stat line for a regular-season game. There is a world in which Peña locked up the fourth wide receiver spot for Jacksonville this weekend, and with Washington dealing with what is said to be a minor injury, there is a chance that the rookie pass catcher could see live action to begin the regular season.
4. Jack Strand
The Atlanta Falcons quarterback battle is firmly between Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr, who was recently cleared for a return to action. That said, there was a different quarterback in Atlanta who stood out in the second week of the preseason. That is undrafted free agent Jack Strand.
He went for 212 yards and a touchdown on Saturday. Again, he is not going to be part of the quarterback battle. That said, the rookie quarterback just made the Falcons front office ask the difficult question of “if we carry three quarterbacks into the regular season, are we cutting the veteran experience of Cooper Rush for an undrafted rookie,” which is a great spot to be in for Strand; because, while he might not make the roster in Atlanta, he is in a great spot for someone to scoop him up following his masterful play on Saturday.
