8. Jalon Daniels
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers seem to be in the midst of a quarterback controversy. No, not for Baker Mayfield’s starting job, although he might not be on the team next season after both sides failed to come to terms on an extension before the start of training camp, but for the backup job. The Buccaneers have veteran reserve quarterback Jacob Browning and undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels duking it out for the spot.
Through two preseason outings, Daniels has looked fantastic. He has thrown for 19/29, or 65 percent, and 182 yards, in addition to 28 rushing yards in his time to shine. It feels like Daniels is firmly in the second quarterback conversation for Tampa Bay, and even if the organization ends up going with the veteran experience of Browning, there should be 31 other teams blowing up Daniels’ phone if the Buccaneers choose not to carry three quarterbacks on the roster.
9. Josh Cuevas
The Baltimore Ravens reinvented its tight end room this offseason. Mark Andrews is still going to be the starter at the position. However, there is a big question mark as to who will be his backup with Isaiah Likely moving to the New York Giants during free agency.
There is still a fair amount of practice and a preseason game left before deciding the position, but rookie Josh Cuevas put himself in an excellent position to take it on Saturday. The rookie tight end led the Ravens with 46 receiving yards this weekend. If Baltimore is looking for someone who can fill in for Andrews as the “ole reliable” role in the passing game every once in a while, Cuevas showed that he is capable of filling it, and could have cemented himself as the second tight end on the depth chart.
10. Kevin Coleman
What is it with these Miami Dolphins wide receivers making acrobatic, highlight reel catches? Last week, fellow rookie Caleb Douglas had his moment to shine. This week, it was Kevin Coleman’s turn.
To make something crystal clear, the Miami starters rested on Saturday, so Coleman did not work with that unit or gain any trust with quarterback Malik Willis like Douglas may have last week. That said, Coleman made a remarkable grab while drawing a pass interference penalty; the irony of Odell Beckham Jr being on the opposite sideline should not be lost on anyone.
Coleman showed that he is a more than capable wide receiver this weekend and, given the state of the Dolphins’ receiver room, could get some amount of playing time in the regular season. If he can keep making plays as he did on Saturday, perhaps Coleman could make a push for a starting job if the veterans in the room struggle this year.
