2. Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers
Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers took down the Rams in Week 1, and Purdy himself had quite a game. He’s an interesting QB, as he does have a ceiling, but when he’s on and playing his best, he’s on.
The 49ers might never win a Super Bowl with Purdy, but he’s clearly been good enough to help them get to one, and he does have efficiency throughout his career. Purdy can do a little bit of everything as well. After this win, Purdy moves to 31-15 as a starter and now has a career passer rating of 104, along with 87 touchdown passes.
If the 49ers can figure out how to fend-off some of these injuries, this team could capture the NFC West title this year and make a deep run. There is also a chance that Purdy plays out of his mind this year, as he finished fourth in MVP voting back in 2023, so he’s certainly capable of it.
1. Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills
Well, that was certainly a game for Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills. I am not sure many of us expected the Bills and Texans, of all teams, to combine for 67 points, but here we are. Allen finished with 334 passing yards and two touchdowns, completing 20 of 29 passes. He was ‘vintage’ Allen and was able to make one more play than Stroud, which is clearly what was needed. Buffalo gets a huge victory over Houston, as both teams are good enough to win their respective divisions this year, so Buffalo securing that head-to-head tiebreaker is massive.
And if Allen hopes to win MVP this year (why wouldn’t he?), this is certainly a great way to start the season. Running back James Cook had just 57 rushing yards, so Allen was having to carry a bigger load. Unsurprisingly, Allen also saw the end zone as a runner, scoring twice. It was a ho-hum four-touchdown game for the Bills’ starting passer.
Based on how Allen looked in Week 1 and how dominant he’s been for years now, Allen could be primed for yet another massive season.
