12. Jordan Love, Green Bay Packers
Last week: 14th
Just like many of the games in the early window on Sunday, the Packers’ game against the Jets was affected by weather. That doesn’t mean every bad play is excused, but it is necessary context given the ugly nature of the game itself.
Jordan Love put forth a pretty impressive performance against the Vikings in what turned out to be a blowout loss in Week 1. His offensive line (and defense) let him down badly in that game last week.
In Week 2, Love deserves at least some of the blame for the Packers’ sloppiness overall, but that offense just doesn’t have any balance right now. The fact of the matter is, Love’s game against the Jets was a mixed bag of good and bad, but the Packers found a way to win and Love had a pair of touchdowns to help them do it.
As the season goes along, I’m still expecting Love to hit a stride and play at an MVP level. The Packers needed to get a win badly and Love helped make it happen.
11. Caleb Williams, Chicago Bears
Last week: 11th
You absolutely hate to see the type of scene we saw in Chicago on Sunday as the Bears fell to the Minnesota Vikings by a final score of 9-3. It wasn’t that the Bears’ offense – which just scored 59 the weeks prior – was suddenly incompetent. The elements played a major role in causing this game to be a low-scoring affair.
And even with the elements considered, Caleb Williams was out there making plays for his team.
As the Bears approached the end zone late in the game, Williams looked like he might have been tripped up from behind as he went to the ground, but the reason he ended up hitting the ground wasn’t because he was tripped up, it was because he pulled up lame with a hamstring injury.
He was in considerable pain and was carted off the field with tears in his eyes. You have to figure Williams is going to miss some time with an injury, but you can only hope that any sort of long-term injury or disaster has been avoided. Our friends at Bear Goggles On have you covered for all injury updates surrounding Williams.
Backup Tyson Bagent ended up taking Williams’ place in the 4th quarter and took a sack on the last play of the game with the Bears threatening to score.
