30. Carson Wentz, Minnesota Vikings
Last week: 22nd
Not that we’re trying to really diminish what Carson Wentz is capable of bringing to the table as a backup quarterback, but he’s very clearly just a backup quarterback.
The Vikings got a massive second-half surge from Wentz against the Green Bay Packers in Week 1, but he wasn’t going to be getting set up with a bunch of short fields again when they took on the Bears.
And yes, the elements mattered in this game significantly, but Wentz is one of those backup quarterbacks who simply needs things to all be right around him in order to have success. And to his – and the Vikings’ – credit, things went well around him on Sunday. The defense of the Vikings absolutely dominated, Aaron Jones ran for over 100 yards, and the Vikings won the game.
Two weeks in a row, Wentz has done his job, but he’s limited.
29. Deshaun Watson, Cleveland Browns:
Last week: 32nd
Well, we never thought we’d see the day, but Deshaun Watson isn’t dead last on this week’s QB Power Rankings. As a matter of fact, do we dare say he impressed against the Buccaneers on the road?
Considering how certain I was personally that the Browns were going to go into Tampa Bay and get absolutely smacked around, I think it’s definitely safe to say.
Watson not only looked more efficient as a passer than we’ve seen in the entirety of his Cleveland Browns career, but he actually made some plays and some big-time throws that raised some eyebrows and dropped some jaws.
We just haven’t seen this type of performance from Watson, maybe dating back to his better years with the Texans. It would really be a shocker if he had turned some type of corner.
