2. Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs
Are the Chiefs back? Patrick Mahomes has been pretty good to begin the season. He has five touchdowns against onee interception, and the Chiefs are 2-0. Kansas City blew out the Broncos in Week 1 but did need overtime to defeat the Colts.
Most of Mahomes’ passing yards are coming after the catch, so this isn’t a QB who is consistently pushing the ball down the field right now. The Chiefs do have a rather easy stretch to begin the season, so we could see their record get some breathing room.
What I am most interested in seeing is how this offense looks later in the season, as the wide receiver room is still bad, and the Chiefs can’t continue giving 20+ touches a game to Kenneth Walker III.
We might actually see Mahomes and the offense regress a bit. But that isn’t a guarantee, and we’re not factoring in future production here.
Mahomes looks like his old self. He’s completing a respectable 63.5 percent of his passes. He has 566 yards and a 103.8 passer rating, along with a QBR of 69.7.
I guess when we make the mistake of doubting the Chiefs, they prove us wrong, so I don’t mess around with my ranking of Mahomes here. He’ll take the No. 2 spot until he proves he does not deserve it.
1. Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills
Josh Allen has been the best QB in the sport through two weeks and takes the No. 1 spot in our QB power rankings. The Buffalo Bills are 2-0 to begin the season and have gotten some marvelous production from the offense.
But at the same time, the defense has been struggling massively. In fact, Allen’s ridiculous production up to this point has honestly been needed, as Buffalo could legitimately be 0-2 if Allen wasn’t playing this well.
He’s completed 66.7 percent of his passes thus far for 582 yards, five touchdowns, and zero interceptions. I do believe there is some caution that we have to take here, as Allen will typically enjoy a ridiculously efficient stretch most every single season.
And when that happens, you’ll hear some of the media talk about how ‘this is finally going to be the year for Buffalo!”
That is then followed by some shaky Allen performances and the team losing some games here and there. While Allen has been awesome this year, the Bills have some issues, and it’s only been two weeks.
A lot can change in just one week as well. Of note, Allen owns an 86.2 QBR and has a 125.8 passer rating. He won the MVP award in 2024 and is currently on pace to run away with the MVP this year.
