2. Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals
Given how decent Cincinnati’s defense looked across the first two weeks, I am not sure it was crazy to think that scoring 27 points would have been enough to win. Joe Burrow was largely outstanding in Week 3, tossing 282 passing yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions.
It was a classic Burrow performance, honestly. He’s able to carve up most defenses in the NFL with how quick he is to process during a play, but his defense honestly let him down big-time. Allowing 30 points to a mostly untalented Steelers offense is rather inexcusable if you ask me.
What the Bengals still have going for them is a strong 2-1 record and one of the very best passers in the NFL. Burrow is likely to remain near the top of our QB rankings, as he’s simply been that way for most of his career.
As long as the Bengals defense does not bottom out this year, they’ll win enough games to get into the playoffs and do have the ability to make a deep run.
1. Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers
Brock Purdy is absolutely ridiculous, folks. Purdy and San Francisco are now 3-0 on the season, and while the schedule has been easy thus far, Purdy is still lighting it up. He now has nine touchdown passes against just one interception this year. He has a 100+ passer rating in all three games this year.
He’s thrown for 287 and 297 passing yards across the past two weeks, and his passer rating during those games has been 149.1 and 133.8. The interesting thing about Purdy is that he’s not consistently in that top tier of QBs in this league - he’s not physically imposing or anything, but he checks all of the boxes and can be a top-5 player when he’s on and when the 49ers aren’t dealing with a dreadful amount of injuries.
They are this year, but the soft schedule thus far has helped the situation. Purdy takes a high spot in our QB power rankings because he’s deserved it and played like an MVP candidate thus far.
How the 49ers continue on with all these injuries will be something to watch, as they could go on a bit of a slide.
