28. James Winston, New York Giants
James Winston is a fun player, but if any team wants to win with Winston as the QB, they can’t ask him to do too much. He’s too erratic a player and will put the ball in harm’s way much more than necessary.
And in Week 3, Winston went 14/22 for 118 yards, and did enough for the New York Giants to win. All of a sudden, the Giants are 2-1 on the season. With Jaxson Dart out, though, the Giants season honestly lost its main purpose.
This season was supposed to be a year where Dart took that next step and cemented himself as a franchise QB, but he’ll likely be out unless the Giants make the playoffs, which is not likely.
What the Giants do have with Winston, though, is a starting-caliber QB every so often. Winston has started many times in this league and can light it up from time to time. I am not sure the Giants have the personnel for that to be the case, but there are honestly teams that are in worse QB situations than the Giants right now.
27. Michael Penix Jr., Atlanta Falcons
Michael Penix Jr. had a very strong outing for the Atlanta Falcons in Week 3, as they were able to blow out the lowly Green Bay Packers. The Falcons simply looked massively different on offense with Penix QB-ing the unit, and, hopefully, that remains the case all year.
This feels like the year for Penix to prove whether he’s a franchise QB or not. He’s appeared in just 15 NFL games and has tossed 13 touchdowns against seven interceptions, so he’s honestly, in a way, still a de-facto rookie given that he hasn’t yet appeared in 17 games.
Obviously, he’s in his third year, but the injury concerns are massive here, and it does seem like there is some legitimate talent to work with. Now that the Falcons have their first win out of the way, it’ll be up to Penix to stay on the field and continue churning out decent performances.
The Falcons likely won’t hesitate to bring in a new QB in 2027 if Penix doesn’t play well enough. So far, though, so good. As a rookie in 2024, he tossed three touchdowns against three interceptions, but in his second year, he managed to toss nine touchdowns against three interceptions, so he could be on the right track.
