8. Jared Goff, Detroit Lions
Last week: 3rd
Another week of impressive numbers for Jared Goff, and simultaneously, another week of not-so-good results for the Detroit Lions.
Goff passed for 412 yards against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday night and had a touchdown with no interceptions, giving him the 3rd-most games in NFL history with 400+ passing yards and 0 interceptions.
Goff’s issue at this point is not throwing the ball all around the yard, but stepping up in big moments for the Lions. They need Goff to start delivering in some clutch moments, and he couldn’t do it against the Panthers.
To be fair, the Lions’ defense also gave up 32 points, and Goff can’t do everything.
The sequence at the end of the game was rough. Goff was only sacked one time against Carolina, but it was a costly one.
Goff is one of the most accurate quarterbacks in the NFL, and he can’t control the defense. You should be able to win most games with the way he plays quarterback.
7. Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals
Last week: 2nd
To say the Cincinnati Bengals put it on Joe Burrow to go out there in Week 4 and beat the Jacksonville Jaguars on his own would be an understatement.
Tee Higgins (who still had 11 catches), left the game due to a groin injury. Ja’Marr Chase left the game due to a concussion. The Bengals got 10 rushing yards out of Chase Brown on 9 carries. Burrow threw 54 passes and racked up 428 yards, but he needed at least 429.
On a 4th down play and a good-looking drive to try and win on the last possession, the Bengals called an angle route for Chase Brown and got him isolated on a linebacker in man coverage. It was a perfect call, except the Jaguars had someone waiting right in front of the sticks to make an incredible play.
And just like that, the chance of coming back was wrecked. But without Chase and Higgins for pieces of this game, Burrow did quite well. He threw a pair of interceptions, including an absolutely unacceptable play in the red zone at the beginning of the 4th quarter.
Even the best QBs in the league have been fallable this season.
