6. Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens
Last week: 8th
After a scare on Sunday, there is a double dose of good news for Baltimore Ravens fans regarding quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Obviously, the team was able to beat the Titans on Sunday, but star quarterback Lamar Jackson is also considered day-to-day with an ankle injury after leaving the stadium in a protective boot.
Before his injury, Jackson was absolutely shredding the Titans’ defense. He completed 15-of-20 passes for 222 yards and a pair of touchdowns, adding another 20 yards on the ground as a runner.
Even if you grade on a curve because of the opponent, Jackson was outstanding. The hope is obviously that he was just kept out of the rest of the game out of precaution, and because the Ravens had built a substantial enough lead to simply protect it the rest of the way with Tyler Huntley under center.
And while Huntley is a quality backup, this Ravens team is only going to go as far as Jackson can take them. They need him healthy.
5. Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills
Last week: 6th
There are times when Josh Allen puts on the Superman cape and he looks absolutely unstoppable. Then there are times when he puts on the Superman cape and you just wish you could tell him not to go out there and try to do too much.
Allen’s “Kryptonite” since he came into the league has been giving the football away. He will load up the stat sheet, he will dominate games, and he’s one of the truly elite playmakers we’ve seen at the position.
But he will put the ball in harm’s way.
And that burned him against the Patriots. After the Patriots’ offense marched down the field to take a lead late in the 4th quarter, Allen tried to force a pass deep downfield into contested coverage, and it was picked easily.
There’s probably never going to be a time when Allen falls too far on lists like this, but he’s definitely had a couple of tougher games in a row after looking absolutely locked in the first two weeks of the season.
