28. Kyler Murray, Minnesota Vikings
Last week: 29th
We are still very much in the discovery phase with Kyler Murray as the quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings. And as he stated after the Vikings’ win over the Dolphins on Sunday, the offense as a whole is still trying to kick down the proverbial door as they struggle during the team’s 4-0 start.
Murray has obviously not been on the field for all of it. Justin Jefferson hasn’t been on the field for all of it. There are a lot of factors at play here, but we don’t have enough of a sample from Murray in Minnesota yet.
The last two drives of the game were more along the lines of what everyone hoped for when he got to Minnesota. He completed 13-of-14 passes for 120 yards, and perhaps we’re starting to see him turn a little bit of a corner in Kevin O’Connell’s offense.
Right now, as well as the defense has been playing for the Vikings, Murray is being afforded the opportunity to fail as needed, learn, and build confidence with a little margin for error.
27. Geno Smith, New York Jets
Last week: 15th
It’s extremely rare to see a quarterback play an entire game and finish with just 8 completions in today’s NFL.
The New York Jets’ offense had the ball for just 17:15 in their loss against the Chicago Bears, and the Bears obviously had the ball for the remaining 42:45 of the game. It was absolutely a sight to behold.
Smith completed just 8-of-15 passes on the day, and the Jets were 0-for-7 on third downs. He might have ranked 15th as of last week’s QB Power Rankings, but Geno Smith is one of those quarterbacks who could play like he’s in the upper half of the league one game, then go for a stretch of games where he’s a complete liability at the position.
You have to win in spite of Smith being your QB most of the time these days, not because of him. And that’s the tough spot the Jets found themselves in against the Bears. Smith just doesn’t have the ability to go out there and take over games.
