24. Michael Penix Jr., Atlanta Falcons
Last week: 27th
***Falcons play on MNF vs. the New Orleans Saints. Penix’s ranking will be updated after the game
There is no question that the arrival of Michael Penix Jr. into the lineup for the Atlanta Falcons was a breath of fresh air.
Going into Green Bay on Thursday night to kick off Week 3, we saw Penix right the ship in a big way for the Atlanta offense. It’s amazing how even just the threat of solid quarterback play opens things up for Bijan Robinson and the Falcons’ running game.
At this point, Penix hasn’t played nearly enough football to make any sweeping determinations about him either way, even this season. Certainly not for the long term of the Falcons. But that’s what’s at stake this year for the 2024 first-round pick out of Washington.
He’s got a shot on Monday Night Football, a national stage, to prove to the Falcons that he can be the franchise QB of hte future.
23. Jacoby Brissett, Arizona Cardinals
Last week: 14th
This will feel like an aggressive drop down the list for a guy who ranked 14th last week, and whose team was in position to potentially score a go-ahead touchdown in the final seconds of a game against the New York Giants on Sunday.
Simply put, Jacoby Brissett is not in the top half of the league in quarterback play right now. Maybe on his best day, you’re going to get average and even above-average play from him.
Against the New York Giants, however, Brissett threw a trio of interceptions, including a pick-six to end the game. And on that particular play, it looked like he had nothing in Michael Wilson’s direction, but he simply threw it directly to Deonte Banks anyway.
There was no expectation of the Cardinals being overly competitive this season, but Brissett did hold out for more money as the starter on the team. And he got it. He has to play better in big moments like that.
