28. Jalon Daniels, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Last week: 28th
You hate to see such a gutsy effort end the way it did for Jalon Daniels and the Buccaneers in their overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Daniels didn’t play a perfect game, by any stretch, but getting sacked by Jalen Ramsey on a 4th down play in overtime was absolutely brutal. The rookie will learn from it.
Daniels finished with just 164 yards passing on 43 attempts, as well as a pair of interceptions and five sacks. Again, he’s a rookie operating in just his third start. But there is some talent there, and Daniels has a good feel for the game. He’s making mistakes, but he’s proving why the Bucs were confident enough to make him Baker Mayfield’s backup despite being an undrafted rookie.
He’s impressive.
27. Jameis Winston/JJ McCarthy, New York Giants
Last week: 23rd
The New York Giants had enough of the Jameis Winston experience in Week 6 as they were getting blown out by the New Orleans Saints, so they threw JJ McCarthy into the game and…he was good?
Yeah, I think he was.
Although McCarthy’s potential game-tying touchdown throw hit the ground incomplete, he was as impressive as you could have possibly imagined with 243 yards on just 11 completions. He’s definitely earned himself another opportunity going forward, and the Giants will take the upside he presents at the position while Jaxson Dart is out injured.
There is obviously going to be risk involved with him going out there and not playing with house money every week, but McCarthy’s live arm and athleticism were on display. It might be his show going forward.
