Peter Schrager offered Vikings an unexpected warning about JJ McCarthy

The battle for the Minnesota Vikings' starting quarterback position in 2026 between Kyler Murray and JJ McCarthy didn't last long. The Vikings named Murray the starter before the preseason even kicks off, effectively kicking McCarthy to the curb.

The decision to roll with Murray undoubtedly has long-term implications for McCarthy, whose future with the organization feels very much in jeopardy. And this would have to be considered par for the course when it comes to the Vikings, especially in recent years.

The Vikings moved on from Sam Darnold after the 2024 season, and he promptly won the Super Bowl the next season with Seattle. They also had Daniel Jones in the building, and he looks like he could be a viable long-term solution for the Colts if he can stay healthy.

Kevin O'Connell's teams have had a good amount of regular season success, but they have completely whiffed on the quarterback position. And ESPN's Peter Schrager issued somewhat of a surprise warning of sorts for them if they plan on giving up on JJ McCarthy already.

Just two years and 10 starts into his NFL career, after entering the NFL as one of the youngest prospects in his draft class, the Vikings undoubtedly are giving up on McCarthy too early.

Now, let's just pump the brakes for a moment here. The Vikings could potentially keep McCarthy as a backup, and he could get on the field again as an injury replacement. But the implications of the decision they made with Kyler Murray are undoubtedly that the organization has lost faith in McCarthy's development.

It would be shocking if there was any form of a long-term future between McCarthy and the Vikings at this point.

And what Schrager is saying in that clip from The Pat McAfee Show is very important. Although McCarthy has been made fun of to no end for his "Nine" alter ego, and although his on-field performance has been uninspiring -- to say the least -- the Vikings did win 6 of the 10 games he started, and he is still an extremely young player who lost his rookie year due to injury.

Last year was effectively McCarthy's first NFL season, and his first opportunity to actually play, and he dealt with injuries once again.

And those are part of the equation here as well. The Vikings have a raw quarterback who has dealt with injuries, and there is always pressure in the NFL to win. The irony here is that pretty much everyone unanimously agreed when McCarthy came to the NFL that he was stepping into the best situation of any of the six quarterbacks taken in the 1st round of that 2024 draft class.

At this stage, Kevin O'Connell has proven that he's a really good head coach, but the Vikings are also in the fast lane on a parallel highway right now of mismanaging the quarterback position. They have shown a masterclass in poor evaluation of talent and projection, which is the biggest reason why former GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was fired.

Now, we will all get to sit back and wait for the fallout of this. Does McCarthy get traded in the near future? Do the Vikings fall flat on their faces with Kyler Murray, or does he return to the form he once showed under Kliff Kingsbury in Arizona?

The way some in the media have come to McCarthy's defense in this situation is very interesting, and it's hard to say Schrager is wrong in what he's saying and implying here. The Vikings have gotten it wrong multiple times in recent years, and they need to be careful they're not doing it again.
