Ty Simpson has already done more than prove the Rams right in the preseason

To say the Los Angeles Rams were flamed for selecting quarterback Ty Simpson with their top pick in the 2026 NFL Draft would be an understatement.

For a team with Super Bowl aspirations, the selection of Simpson seemed to overshadow even the trade the team made at the beginning of the offseason when they acquired cornerback Trent McDuffie. Why not get another playmaker for Matthew Stafford? Why risk upsetting Stafford after an MVP season? Why not keep adding to the offensive line? Why not literally anything else?

Why Ty Simpson?

Even Sean McVay didn't seem pleased with it at the time, no matter how he tries to excuse his reaction at the time. But in the preseason, what we've seen from Simpson has more than justified the selection. It's given the Rams perhaps another high-quality option to turn to in the event a backup is needed.

Ty Simpson's preseason has quickly proven the Los Angeles Rams were right

Here are Simpson's final preseason numbers:

- 47-of-60
- 382 passing yards
- 3 TDs, 0 INT
- 109.9 passer rating

The numbers speak for themselves. While Simpson's preseason debut involved quite a bit of quick game, he has certainly proven that he can push the ball down the field, make accurate throws to every level, and make impressive plays when he has to get outside the pocket as well.

The Rams did a good job of evaluating his fit in their offense, and Simpson has done a good job of executing what he's being asked to do.

It's been impressive enough to the point that the Rams shouldn't just be applauded for making the right choice in the draft, but is it possible that the offense could actually thrive under Simpson in the event that Matthew Stafford has to miss any time?

At the risk of sounding like a broken record along with pretty much everyone else in the NFL world, this situation is looking and feeling very similar to the Aaron Rodgers-Jordan Love situation that took place once upon a time in Green Bay.

The Rams might have gone about things differently with Stafford in order to keep him happy, but the succession plan looks like it could wind up being seamless. It doesn't get much better from a rookie quarterback than what we saw from Simpson in the preseason, and the Rams have to be thrilled with what he brought to the table.

That looks like a quarterback you know you can count on if his number is called, and for a team with immediate Super Bowl aspirations, nothing is more important.
