New York Giants Place Jerrel Jernigan on Season Ending IR

The bad news keeps coming for the 0-2 New York Giants.

After putting cornerback Walter Thurmond III on season ending injured reserve due to a torn pectoral earlier this week, the team announced they would be placing wide receiver Jerrel Jernigan on IR as well due to a mid foot sprain. Jernigan saw a lot of action during the first two weeks, as he was the primary third receiver for the Giants. The fourth year receiver ends his 2014 season with six catches in two games. Jernigan had a very strong end to 2013, as he recorded three touchdowns in two games.

Jernigan’s injury won’t completely break the Giants, but it obviously is slightly detrimental to the team.

Jernigan is a quick receiver, and the Giants liked getting him the ball in open space.

In the wake of the injury to Jernigan, the Giants activated Julian Talley from the practice squad, and they signed two additional receivers to their practice squad, Travis Harvey and L’Damian Washington.

The Giants need somebody to step up and replace Jernigan. The most likely candidate is rookie Odell Beckham Jr., although the talented rookie has been sidelined with an injury he suffered during the first days of training camp.

Head coach Tom Coughlin told nj.com that, “the training staff is claiming he’s (Beckham) getting better.” The rookie out of LSU also spoke to the media. “I can’t really give any percentages just ’cause it’s not all the way my decision,’’ Beckham said to the New York Post. “I guess you could say it’s 50-50.” Beckham also said he thinks he has a, “realistic,” chance of playing against the Houston Texans on September 21.

However, that’s mostly speculation, as there’s no exact date set for when Beckham will be healthy. Furthermore, it will likely still take Beckham time to become comfortable in the offense once he returns.

With the Giants likely devoid of Beckham for week 3, their cast of receivers has dwindled down to current underachievers Victor Cruz and Rueben Randle, and the unproven trio of Preston Parker, Julian Talley and Corey Washington.

The Giants also discovered starting inside linebacker Jon Beason could be out, “for a while,” after aggravating his previous foot injury.
