Matt Prater will work out for Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions have released kicker Alex Henery today after he missed all three field goals in yesterday’s pitiful performance against the Buffalo Bills, and he showed us all exactly why the Philadelphia Eagles wanted to cut ties with him. Henery has plenty of accuracy on shorter kicks, but he has absolutely no range and probably doesn’t deserve to kick in this league due to his severe lack of leg strength. The Lions are scrambling for an adequate kicker at this point, but the good thing is that there are a few quality options available.

More from Detroit Lions

It was reported earlier that veteran kicker Jay Feely will work out for the Lions tomorrow, and while Feely would certainly be a good signing, some of us were wondering if the team would take a peek at Matt Prater, who was a surprising cut from the Denver Broncos on Friday. Prater is getting ready to come off of his four-game suspension, and he’s arguably the best kicker in the game (I think it’s a coin flip between him and Stephen Gostkowski).

Well, the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the Lions will indeed work Prater out along with Feely tomorrow, and it will be interesting to see which of the two kickers gets the nod. Prater has to be the better choice, and I wonder if the Lions would make him their kick-off specialist over Sam Martin if they do decide to sign him.
