Who should the Buffalo Bills target with their second round pick?

The 2015 NFL draft will be here before you know it, so it’s time to start thinking about team needs and potential players who your team may target.

The Buffalo Bills will be without a first-round pick this spring after it was dealt to the Cleveland Browns for the fourth overall pick in 2014. The Bills used that selection on wide receiver Sammy Watkins. Buffalo will have to wait until day two of the draft, where they hold the 50th overall selection.

The Bills have a lot of needs on the offensive side of the ball, so there will be lots of options. They have obvious needs at quarterback and running back while a big receiver would benefit the offense as well. On the offensive line, the Bills need to upgrade at guard and tackle. However, it is likely they will fill these needs through free agency. On the defensive side of the ball, the Bills could add depth at corner or safety, but this will most likely be addressed later on in the draft.

Here are some players who the Bills may select with the 50th overall selection.

QB- Garret Grayson

Colorado State quarterback Garret Grayson is slated to be selected in the middle of the second round. The Bills are in dire need of a quarterback and if Grayson is available when the Bills select, don’t be surprised if they pull the trigger. Grayson possesses solid size at 6’2” and 220 pounds, and has lots of experience at the college level. He has tons of arm strength as he threw for over 4000 yards and 32 touchdowns this past season. Grayson needs to improve his accuracy outside of the pocket, to be a more complete quarterback. If he is still available by the 50th pick, it will be an intriguing option for the Bills.

RB- T.J. Yeldon

With the Bills most likely letting C.J. Spiller walk, and Fred Jackson turning 34 years old next month, the Bills may elect to take a running back with their second-round pick. Who better to take than power back T.J. Yeldon from the University of Alabama? There is no doubt the Bills will be a run- heavy offense, so they are in need of a young power back. Yeldon has very good size at 6’2 and 221 pounds. Although he needs to improve his blocking, Yeldon can make defenders miss due to his quick feet. If the Bills elect to take Yeldon, their running game will improve drastically and will make life easier on the starting quarterback.

WR/TE- Devin Funchess

Although it’s not likely, there is a small chance the Bills may want to select a big pass-catching target as they truly lack one on their current roster. Michigan’s Devin Funchess is an interesting option here, as he stands at 6’5 and 230 pounds. He has played both receiver and tight end at the college level. Funchess has good hands and with his size, obviously has great range, but if the Bills want him to play tight end he will have to gain significant weight. If Funchess is available, the Bills will for sure take a look at him. But I just don’t see him as the best fit in the offense.

Depending on what the Bills do during free agency, will have a big impact on what they will do during the draft. There is no doubt the Bills will be adding at least two quarterbacks, a running back, and a big receiver. Regardless of who the Bills add to their roster, they will have a lot of options. With no first-round pick, it’s crucial that general manager Doug Whaley hits on his first few picks this draft.

With one of the league’s top defensive units, there is a good chance that the Bills will primarily focus on the offensive side of the ball come April. There is still a lot of talent in the second round so Buffalo could still draft an impact player who can come in and start.

It’s definitely an exciting time to be a Bills fan with free agency and the draft just around the corner.
