Dallas Cowboys: Would Kevin Johnson be right at 27th overall?

How about this, Dallas Cowboys fans … Would Wake Forest cornerback Kevin Johnson be the right selection for the Cowboys in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft?

For the Cowboys, they really need help at the cornerback, and basically help in the entire defensive backfield. Want proof of that … watch tape of last season, especially the second half of their divisional playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers.

In that game, Aaron Rodgers and Co. picked apart the Cowboys, and the sting of that loss is still burning for Cowboys. One way the franchise could help begin that rebuild of the defensive backfield is to back away from a pass rusher in the first round and gain the second-rated CB in this draft.

Johnson stands at 6-0 and weighs 188 points (he ran a 4.52 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine), and he’s expected to be drafted in the late first round or second round. So having the 27th overall selection, there is a realistic possibility of him being on the board when it is the Cowboys’ turn to make a pick.

This past season with Wake Forest Johnson, unofficially had 44 total tackles and one interception.

According to Mel Kiper Jr. of ESPN.com, he believes Johnson could be drafted by the Cowboys, writing this following about Johnson:

"“A standout on a lousy team, Johnson has good length for the position and moves and mirrors as well as any cornerback in the draft. He can make man-to-man coverage look so easy at times, and he’s an active run defender.”"

I know the ESPN Insider mock draft by Kiper Jr. was in early March, but he was right in saying during his ESPN.com Insider draft that the Cowboys need improvement at the position.

Now I ask this to all Cowboys fans … Should the Cowboys draft the much-needed help in their defensive backfield, or should they draft pass rush help in this round?

It is an almost certainty the Cowboys will be drafting defense with this first-round selection, but now the decision is just what player fits the need with this pick.

According to Bob Strum of DallasNews.com, he scouted Johnson and had positives to say about the CB:

"“This player is high on my board as a guy who I feel great about. He has the mentality and the makeup that I look for in a corner, and unlike Peters from Washington, he is far more ready to attack the line of scrimmage and is a team defender which make his abilities far more useful to me.”"

That evaluation goes a long way as well, because if the Cowboys would draft a CB in the first round, they will be getting a player who can not only be NFL-ready as soon as he he drafted, but a player who can and will most likely make an impact in 2015 by whomever drafts him at the end of April.

What are your thoughts on the CB position and what the Cowboys should do with their first-round choice?
