On paper, the Miami Dolphins have one of the league’s more formidable defenses, and it goes beyond the fact that they have a defensive line comprised of Ndamukong Suh, Cameron Wake, Olivier Vernon, Earl Mitchell, C.J. Mosley, and tools-y rookie Jordan Phillips. Although they have some holes in their secondary, they have two of the best defensive backs in the game in shutdown corner Brent Grimes and excellent strong safety Reshad Jones, who is back to making good on the five-year, $30.8 million deal he signed after his breakout 2012 season.

Jones’s partner in crime, veteran Louis Delmas over at free safety, is a capable starter, even if he is injury-prone and is no longer at his best in coverage. But while the Dolphins starters at the safety position are set in stone and help form one of the league’s better duos in the back, the organization’s depth behind them is far from settled. In fact, none of their backups played 100 snaps for the team last year, making literally all of the players behind Jones and Delmas unknown commodities.

So let’s try and get to know those guys better, while also appreciating how well Jones did. The backups look intriguing, but the important thing with the Dolphins is that their starting duo is pretty darn good.
