The New England Patriots have had a busy offseason so far,  and that might continue through camp and preseason. This could be through trading or free agency. If the Patriots do trade for a player, they will likely really have to like that player a lot, as they are without a first round pick this upcoming draft, and Belichick values draft picks a lot. He is always good for a surprise, but one player he should definitely consider is RB Knile Davis, if his trade stock isn’t too high.

Davis broke out for the Kansas City Chiefs during the first few weeks of the 2014 season when Jamaal Charles was out due to injury. In these games he tore through opposing defenses without any problems. The opposing defenses were Denver, Miami and New England themselves. In those three games he ran for 318 yards on 70 touches and had three touchdowns. After that, Charles took over again and Davis only got a few touches, but that does not take away from the talent that Davis has. It is a shame to see him on the sidelines for most of the season.

ESPN writer Adam Teicher reports that Davis thinks that he is equally good and talented as Charles. While this statement may not be completely accurate, he isn’t that far off, especially not when it comes to first and second down. Davis’s biggest problem is inability to be on the field on passing downs. He is a sub par pass blocker and has also not been used very heavily as a receiver in the passing game of the Chiefs as well. Davis is an amazing combination of power and speed. In his NFL combine he ran a 4.37 40-yard dash, and he currently weighs 227 pounds.

Currently, the Patriots could really use a new running back to add to their mix, because their current backfield situation is mediocre at best. LaGarrette Blount is currently their No.1 running back on the depth chart, but a slew of running backs are trying to earn time in the backfield. The running backs trying to get some snaps are Jonas Gray, James White, Tyler Gaffney Travaris Cadet, Brandon Bolden and Dion Lewis. One must think that at least three of these running backs will not be on the final roster. No matter who makes the roster, the backfield will be far from elite.

The big issue when trading for Davis would be the cost. When drafted, Davis was a third rounder and that is about where I see his stock currently. The Pats could possibly even get him for a fourth rounder due to the devaluation of running backs. Davis would give the Patriots offense another threat that it currently lacks and would give Davis a opportunity to get quality field time to show his full talent.

His contract still runs for another two years, but when it runs out he will want to get paid, but that won’t happen unless he gets on the field. This trade would be a win for the Patriots, Davis and likely the Chiefs if Charles continues to produce.
