Earl Wolff has been released by the the Philadelphia Eagles according to multiple media outlets. This should come as no shock given the injuries Wolff battled in the offseason and was never a full participant during training camp.

Tim McManus of Birds24/7 (via PhillyMag.com) was the first to report that Wolff had been axed. Don’t expect for the Eagles to sign anyone of significant value as Wolff’s chances to make the roster were slim from the beginning of the offseason.

Later on Friday, Wolff tweeted he had been waived by the Eagles and had another surgery. The dynamic safety from North Carolina State was available for only 18 games in two seasons. In his rookie year, Wolff played in 11 games and totaled 45 combined tackles, 37 of those being solo efforts. This past season, Wolff only played in seven games due to injury. This kept him out of OTAs and minicamp activities. As training camp arrived and Wolff wasn’t participating, it was clear Kelly would have no option but release the two-year pro due to lack of practice time.

It’s hard to truly evaluate a player and compare to his peers when they aren’t out there on the field as well. Injuries are an unfortunate side to sports and players injured during training camp are cut all the time. However, expect Wolff to find a new NFL team one he is fully healed from his injury. He showed his talented skill set at N.C. State and can become a force to reckon within a team’s secondary when he’s 100 percent.

Until then, Wolff has to be patient and heal, while the Eagles most focus on their healthy players and the regular season, which is a few short weeks away. Wolff’s Eagles career wasn’t how either party envisioned it when he was drafted in the fifth round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Yet, there are always NFL players that don’t pan out whether due to injuries. Kelly noted throughout training camp that Wolff couldn’t run because of his knee and would explain why Wolff elected to have another knee surgery today to elevate that pain. It’s a disappointing way for Wolff’s tenure with the Eagles to end, but injuries are something players can’t control and is one of the unknowns in sports than can drastically affect how players and teams succeed.

In short, Wolff is out as an Eagle without being able to truly prove himself due to his knee injury, but he will be back in the NFL before the fans forget he was cut by the Eagles.
