In a recent post season prediction article, one respected Sports Illustrated writer picked the Kansas City Chiefs as the Super Bowl 50 champions.

After starting the 2015 NFL season with a 1-5 record, the Kansas City Chiefs have reeled off 10 consecutive victories to enter the post season as the hottest team in the NFL. It has not always been pretty, but incredible defensive play and a consistent offense has the Chiefs in a strong position as we enter the post season.

Starting this weekend in their match-up against the Houston Texans, can the Chiefs make an improbable run through the post season and take home the Lombardi Trophy as a five seed? At least one respected writer believes so.

Sports Illustrated recently put out an NFL playoff prediction piece where their best NFL writers projected what they expect to happen throughout the post season. Doug Farrar’s bracket stands out above the others because he has the five seeded Kansas City Chiefs defeating the six seeded Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl 50. All of the other writers had either the Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers or New England Patriots winning it all.

Farrar predicts the Chiefs to not only beat the Texans on Saturday, but take out the AFC’s top seed, the Denver Broncos the next week on the road. In the AFC Championship game, Farrar has the Chiefs traveling to Foxbourgh and taking down the Patriots, before beating the Seahawks in the Super Bowl.

Beating the Patriots on the road in a post season game and then taking down a Seattle team who would be scorching hot at that point would be an incredibly impressive run by the Chiefs. Let’s just say, if this happens, Kansas City has earned it.

If the Chiefs are able to make a post season run like this, it will likely be on the back of their defense. A returning Justin Houston would undoubtedly give them a spark, and the rest of the defense would continue to play well.

Alex Smith may not be the most physically impressive quarterback in the NFL, but he does not make many mistakes, and has really learned to put trust into his receivers this season. Jeremy Maclin and Travis Kelce lead an underrated receiving corps, and the two-headed rushing attack of Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware has been incredibly productive.

With the Patriots and Broncos both reeling, the AFC is completely up for grabs. Sure, heading into Denver and New England will not be easy regardless how those teams are playing, but the Chiefs have momentum on their side, and look to be every bit as talented as any other team.

Sure, the Chiefs have not won a Super Bowl since 1969, but what does that have to do with this season? With the Royals winning their first World Series this year since 1985, maybe this is just the year for the City of Fountains?

Is a lengthy road to a Super Bowl victory in the cards for Kansas City? Only time will tell, but it is probably more likely than what many are led to believe. Farrar’s prediction only backs that up.
