Darrelle Revis has long been a staple as a star in NFL secondaries, but his decline and salary reportedly might lead to another departure from the New York Jets.

When the New York Jets brought Darrelle Revis back to the Big Apple, the hope was that he would again be the anchor for the secondary to help bolster an already talent-laden defense. Immediately, that’s what the long-time proprietor of Revis Island did. He locked down receivers on the edge and cemented himself again as an elite player at his position, even as a veteran. In the 2016 season, though, that was far less the case.

Revis spent much of the dismal year for the Jets getting torched by receivers and by the media. Every bit of criticism was deserved as his play was horrendous and his demeanor or ego rarely allowed him to show any admittance of that fact. But if his poor plays wasn’t enough to start to strain ties with the Jets, his massive cap figure is.

The veteran cornerback has a cap number of $15.3 million for the 2017 season and is due a $2 million roster bonus after March 11. That’s why, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, the writing is basically on the wall for Revis and the Jets. If the corner doesn’t take a substantial pay-cut on his contract, he’ll likely be shown the door.

Frankly, this isn’t the most shocking news to ever break. However, it’s interesting just given the name of the player and the ties he has to the organization. After all, the Jets have invested in Revis numerous times. What’s interesting, though, is that Revis has rarely returned any semblance of loyalty.

With that, it feels unlikely that Revis will be back in 2017 for Gang Green as it’s unlikely he’ll take a pay-cut. Then again, perhaps he’ll finally recognize how declining his skills really are and wise up by takin a sure thing to stay with the Jets. Time will tell.
