Indianapolis Colts Select DE Jerry Hughes 31st Overall

Jerry Hughes was a peculiar pick for a team with two of the best defensive ends in the league already in Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis, but this was just a case of picking the perceived best player available.

Hughes will only be a rotational player with Freeney and Mathis ahead of him, so taking him in the first round still doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense. However, I had that same thought when the Colts drafted Anthony Gonzalez in the first round in 2007 with Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison still on the team, so maybe Bill Polian and the Colts just know more than I do.

A lot of 3-4 teams were targeting Hughes as a pass-rushing outside linebacker, but defensive end is his natural position and, even as a situational player, he should be able to make his presence felt in Indianapolis.
