Overall Draft Evaluation
Where they went right:
What I liked about the Patriots’ draft was that they got exactly what they needed first and foremost. While they didn’t select a tight end, they still were able to pick up some key offensive linemen and a solid running back in James White. The pick I most appreciated was DT Dominique Easley. Last season the Patriots’ run defense was absolutely horrendous without Vince Wilfork. With Easley and Wilfork working in tandem, the Pats should be able to stop any running back that comes their way. As well, I liked the amount of underrated and unnoticed talent such as that of WR Jeremy Gallon and DE Zach Moore. It remains to be seen whether or not college success will turn out into NFL success, but we hope that those picks will work out for the Patriots. Last season the Pats needed receivers and this year, they were able to add yet another weapon for Tom Brady to throw to. He will now be more protected in the passing game and will be safe knowing he has numerous players to throw to and also numerous players to give the ball off to in case the passing game isn’t working.
Where they went wrong:
Now although I do agree some of the talent may come from places unexpected, I think that Belichick could have selected better picks in different places. With QB Garoppolo, they may have been getting a tad bit ahead of themselves in the draft. Instead of selecting a backup QB who will most likely sit out the entirety of the 2014 and 2015 seasons, the Pats should have gone out and gotten another WR (one who is actually good). I would have suggested waiting till the early 4th round to draft a QB considering that Tom Savage was still on the board at that time. A strong safety selection would have been nice to work with, however a free safety can still take his place if need be.
The Bottom Line: B-
Overall the diverse amount of players impressed me, however their immediate roles in the Patriots’ offense/defense leaves me wondering if the selection could have been better spent on another player.
