Josh McCown Injury: Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB will not play
Tampa Bay Buccaneers starting quarterback Josh McCown could lose that designation for the rest of the season if Mike Glennon plays well in his absence, as McCown suffered a severely sprained thumb in last week’s loss to the rival Atlanta Falcons on Thursday Night Football. McCown added another awful interception to his resume, as the Falcons turned that pick into a pick-six. It’s been that kind of a year for the offseason signing, and his play has been a far cry from last season’s breakout performance under ace QB guru Marc Trestman.

McCown has always been expected to miss this week’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, with the signing of veteran backup Mike Kafka from the practice squad essentially sealing his faith. According to the Tampa Bay Times’s Rick Stroud, Buccaneers head coach Lovie Smith confirmed that McCown has been ruled out, thus making Kafka the veteran backup behind Glennon.
Most Buccaneers fans are pining the team to start Glennon, who is more talented and has the kind of arm strength that actually fits the tall, talented outside duo of Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans. Both players are long striders a la Alshon Jeffery and need a QB with a strong arm, and they can also bail Glennon out of trouble. Pocket presence isn’t a big strength for him, but he should make sharper decisions than McCown and clearly has better physical tools.
