Ndamukong Suh wants to play in New York

Detroit Lions star defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh will almost certainly exit in free agency this upcoming offseason, as it’s clear he’s going to try and make as much money as he can on the open market. Due to his age, raw talent, and past production, Suh has a shot at becoming the highest-paid defensive player in the game, and that’s most likely his goal at this point. The Lions have been unable to come to terms to a contract extension with Suh despite working hard all offseason to get a deal done (the Lions firmly believe in keeping top talent), but the DT’s price tag has simply been too high. His decision to switch agents was indicative of a desire to make a ridiculous sum of money, and we’ll see just how much he can get in March.

More from Detroit Lions

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported earlier today that both the Lions and Suh are prepared to split ways this offseason, and he is also reporting, via ESPN New York’s Rich Cimini, that Suh would like to play in New York. That sounds pretty typical of a player who doesn’t mind the spotlight, and there’s no doubt that he can thrive in an even bigger market than Detroit.

That said, I definitely wouldn’t hold my breath for playing for either team if I were Suh. First of all, the Jets are way too stacked on the defensive line, and John Idzik doesn’t spend on free agents either. Secondly, the New York Giants aren’t going to make a big signing after binging this past offseason, though he does have a legit shot at going to the Giants if his price tag weren’t so high. After losing Linval Joseph this past offseason, the Giants could have room for a marquee DT. That said, the cost of signing Suh would most likely scare them off.
