Eli Manning on Odell Beckham: ‘he has speed’

The New York Giants passing attack has finally found their groove, as Eli Manning has managed to help lead the team to victory in each of their past two games against the Houston Texans and Washington Redskins, with his performance against the Redskins putrid pass defense being especially impressive. With Odell Beckham Jr. back on the practice field again to start the week, Manning should have a new, talented toy on his hands as the Giants get ready to face an incompetent Atlanta Falcons pass defense that was torn apart by Teddy Bridgewater, Jarius Wright, and the Minnesota Vikings yesterday.

According to NJ.com’s Jordan Raanan, Manning stated that he knows Beckham Jr. “has speed”, and most people would look at that and say, “Uh yeah, that’s an understatement.”

Ever since the Giants drafted Beckham, all I’ve heard is talk about how much the Giants love his speed and how they intend to use him to stretch the field over the top in order to take pressure off of the quick-hit passing game underneath. The problem is that this doesn’t do enough justice to Beckham Jr., who was my second-rated wide receiver in this year’s draft class. Beckham’s calling card is the fact that he can do everything well, including catching passes in contested situations despite his small frame. He’s a whiz at route-running, possesses excellent short-area quickness that allows him to thrive over the middle of the field, and his ability to turn small gains into explosive plays allows him to win at all levels of the field.

I hope the Giants take advantage of his speed before and after the catch, as well as his unique athleticism and intuitive feel for the game.
