Troy Polamalu, Ryan Shazier ruled out

The Pittsburgh Steelers lost two key defensive players to injury in their Sunday Night Football victory over the Baltimore Ravens, and it’s the second time the Steelers have won in blowout fashion on SNF, only to suffer tough losses on that side of the ball. Moreover, it’s the second time rookie inside linebacker Ryan Shazier has went down with an SNF injury, though this issue has been described as a “minor” ankle injury.

More from Pittsburgh Steelers

According to the Steelers official Twitter account, head coach Mike Tomlin has ruled out both star safety Troy Polamalu and Shazier for this week’s game against the bottom-feeder New York Jets, who have shown some signs of life on offense with Michael Vick at the helm, as he hit up Percy Harvin and Eric Decker for a combined 20 receptions.

Polamalu went down with a sprained knee against the Ravens, so another veteran in Will Allen will replace him at safety. So far this season, Polamalu has recorded 51 tackles, and hopefully this knee sprain doesn’t cause him to miss any more games. He’s still an effective player despite his age, and while losing him against the Jets isn’t a big deal, the Steelers wouldn’t want to play without him for an extended period of time.

Shazier will likely miss just this week’s game, because it would be a surprise for this ankle injury to cause him to have a second significant chunk of missed time this season (he missed a few weeks earlier this year with an MCL sprain due to the aforementioned MNF injury in Week 3).
