Josh McCown says he’s fully healthy
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are going back to veteran quarterback Josh McCown for this week’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, which are, incidentally, the last team McCown played against before being benched. His benching came at the same time as a multi-week thumb injury, and, as McCown stated, that was a brutal Thursday Night Football loss. The Falcons harassed McCown before he injured his thumb, as he went 5-12 with a pick. His other games weren’t much better, as he completely embarrassed himself out of the confines of Marc Trestman, Brandon Marshall, and Alshon Jeffery.

According to Buccaneers official site beat writer Scott Smith, McCown stated that his thumb as “completely” healed, but that much should be obvious at this point. He stated that “he can do everything he’s supposed to do”, and that much is clear from a health perspective. But you would be forgiven for being skeptical as to whether or not McCown is good enough to do all of those things. He played excellent, efficient football for the Bears last season, but that was last year; he needs to live up to his contract this season.
Switching quarterbacks back-and-forth is a bit risky, because the Buccaneers could end up having to go back to second-year pro Mike Glennon if McCown doesn’t show improvement in his second stint as the Bucs starter. I wonder if the Bucs have hurt Glennon’s confidence, but I don’t think that’s an issue with him; Glennon seems like a resilient player.
